Bye-bye Butterflies!

Today we released the butterflies outside (they didn't seem to like being kept in a cardboard box in our classroom).  It was very exciting and I am happy to say that all three butterflies successfully flew off into the world.

Our Video Conference

Today we had a video conference with Ms. Katie from Camden Gardens in New Jersey and we learned all about different types of seeds- seeds you eat, seeds that can float, and what role seeds have with plants.

Growing and Changing!

Our caterpillars ate all weekend and they are three times the size they were on Friday.  Our plants also grew tremendously over the weekend.  It is so exciting to see things grow and change in kindergarten.

Trees are Living Things

Today during guided reading we read two different books about trees and what are living things.  We also watched the book "Once There Was a Tree" and learned about how scientists study trees to learn information about our Earth.

Recycling, Pollution, and Conservation

In science this past three weeks we have talked about different ways to keep our Earth healthy and clean. Our class library is filled with different books on ways to help the environment and we have watched several excellent Reading Rainbows and read excellent stories that have helped us understand pollution and conservation. We also learned that everyone can help keep the earth clean- even kids!
Some of the books that we have listened to include:

Five Senses with our Science Lab Coordinators

Thank you so much to our wonderful science lab coordinators Mrs. Becker and Mrs. Choi for coming to our class to do a preview lesson on the five senses.  The kiddos were so excited when our volunteers popped popcorn and talked about using all five senses with the popcorn including taste- yummy popcorn.  We will be attending the science lab next week to explore all five senses.  Please check back to see pictures of our very first science lab.  Thanks!

Scientist of the Day!

Beginning in December, we will start a science project called "scientist of the day".  Below is a note from Cindy Becker who is the kindergarten science lab director.

Parents,

We are going to start a new program in the kindergarten classes with your help. We tried it out in Mrs. Jenkins’ class and it has been a big hit. It is called “scientist of the day.” The students will take turns being scientist of the day and when it is their turn, they get to bring home a science bag filled with items to explore their world. They get to wear a lab coat just like a real scientist and record their discoveries (with your help) in a journal to share with the class. The bag will also have a book to read with them that is science related.

If you have anything at home that you would like to donate to our program (measuring devices, magnifying glasses, kindergarten level books with a science theme, or anything you think we could use) please send it in with your child to their classroom. We are also requesting a $1 donation, if you can, to help cover some of the costs of starting this program. We appreciate any help you can give and hope you enjoy this program as much as the students.

Thanksgiving Cooking

Many thanks to our wonderful parent volunteers for helping us cook yummy food.  We made cornbread, pumpkin pie, a sweet potato dish, and mashed potatoes.
