Amazing Grace

This week we are learning about Martin Luther King Jr and how brave he was. Today we watched "Amazing Grace" on bookflix that tells the story of a young girl named Grace who realizes she can be anything she wants even of others tell her she can't.

Learning to Visualize and Make Mental Images

We have begun our unit on visualizing. Visualizing is important for reading comprehension and for reading strategies. Below is a newsletter about how you can help your child practice at home. The Jolly Postman

Today I read this book using our smartdocument camera and the kiddos loved it! For all those who aren't familiar with this unique book, inside are real letters and deliveries from the postman including a puzzle, game, and other fun things. I purchased this book last year for 50 percent off at Barnes and Noble the day after Christmas.

Book Fair Coming Next Week!

The JBD scholastic book fair is coming next week! You may come and shop with your child each day at 8:25-8:40 (am class) or 11:15-11:30 (pm class). We will not be visiting the book fair as a whole class. If you are unable to attend the bookfair during these times, the book fair will also be open after school. If you have any questions, please call our library at 648-2440 ext 82460.

Today we read this book because we love all the Knuffle Bunny stories. The original story of Knuffle Bunny is on bookflix.

Our November and December Reading Log

This letter will be sent home on Monday explaining our new reading log.

Teacher Note: If you are a teacher and want to post this letter on your website, I would suggest to save the pdf file off of the scholastic website and then have zamzar (www.zamzar.com) convert the file into a jpeg. Great News!

I just found out from Mrs. Capwell that my grant was selected to receive funding which means we have Bookflix for another year. I just wanted to say a quick thank you to Mrs. Greene (our class assistant), Mrs. Hardesty (our librarian), Mrs. Carroll (our computer resource teacher), and Mrs. Capwell (our principal) for all of their help.

Daily Five

We will soon have guided reading groups and during that time students work on various independent literacy activities. Above students are working on word work (spelling words on teh smartboard), work on writing, and listening to reading

Tumblebooks!

Today at our grade level meeting, I found out that the school system has purchased a subscription to "tumblebooks" which my students use during listening to reading in our classroom. I know many of you emailed me to get the login/password for bookflix, but tumblebooks is another wonderful resource with many books and the kiddos love using it in class. If you would like to have the password for tumblebooks, please email me. The tumblebook subscription will last all year, but the bookflix subscription will expire in November unless I receive the grant again. Thanks!

Fall Into Reading

It’s Falling into reading with Mrs. Rose’s Kindergarten Friends

Dear Parents,
It is so important that children be exposed to books and reading each day in order to develop a love of literature and reading skills that will last a lifetime. In an effort to kindle the spark for September and October, our classes will be participating in a reading nightly for twenty minutes as we are “Falling Into Reading with Mrs. Roses Kindergarten Friends”.
The goal is for each child to read twenty minutes per night with an adult. You can read to your child, your child can read to you, or you can do a little of both. We are asking that you record our child’s reading on the reading log. Once your child has completed his or her reading log please return it to school in their folder and he or she will be awarded with a reading leaf for their efforts, and a new reading log will be sent home. The success of this program would not happen without our wonderful parents. Thank you again for your continued support of your child’s reading habits. It is truly wonderful to see their excitement grow as they become more self-confident with their reading.

"The Summer Reading Program begins on June 14. Head to your local library to sign up and receive a reading log to track your reading time. When you complete the program you’ll receive cool prizes. Our New Read Aloud

We are reading Junie B. Jones is Captain Field Day in class and getting excited out our kindergarten field day in the begnining of June.

We are reading Charlotte's Web as our new read aloud and the kiddos are mesmerized by the story.  After we finish the book we will try to watch the movie if we have time.

Our New Read Aloud

We are currently reading Mr. Popper's Penquins in class.  This classic book that tells such a simple tale was written in 1938 and has been a favorite among all my kindergarten classes. 

Practicing our Reading

First grade is right around the corner and we've been practicing reading independently.  The classroom is quiet and happy as everyone reads with just a murmur of voices and the occasional giggle.  Even Mrs. Rose has had time to read a few pages of some of her favorite children's books.  Please continue to encourage your child to read quietly to themselves or you each day.
